Anyone own or use a drum machine? Please Share. I'm using the Elektron Rytm. It's such a brilliant machine in terms of function. The sequencer in it is what makes me love it. Sounds are analog with the ability to play samples. Writing music with this changes everything I do stylistically. I also Have a Dave Smith Tempest. The Tempest is pretty raw sounding machine. I found that it's a better machine for creating less Dance Floor sounding sounds. It's a bitch to design pure analog drum sounds. The Nord Drum 2 is a cool module for drums. It's A virtual Analog module. I like this for the clarity of the sounds and unusual characteristics it offers. Well, Lets here what makes your studio ticks.

I use Drumebrute. All analog which makes the pallete limited, however the sounds are strong and i can run it through an fx unit to give more variations. Also it has a filter and polyrhythms which add interest. Much prefer using this to software and i like the ease of live tweaks / mutes etc. Ive started to make tracks that i could perform live on my own using only live hardware (Drumbrute / bass station 2 / ultranova / fx units and mixer) coupled to triggered midi software, just to give me some perameters to work within, otherwise there are so many options its hard to get going with new tracks. You have good quality instruments and it comes through in your music.
Im rendering to MP3 for soundcloud which is taking some of the shine away from my mixes. Are others still using this or another format? Wav is just to large but i hear there are other compressed formats that give a better / clearer result than MP3. My EQ`ing also probably needs some work.

no drum machines @gong sound good. all software drum kits in ableton that I can program through midi notes. resampling and altering existing samples with Ableton's sampler and simpler for me. Too many kits to even go through. always reach for similar sounds. Double up kicks, add fx's. Once I get a kick that works (my oppinion)I keep using it, unless I change genre's. I did get some good sounds bundled in with the Fuc-us-rite audio interface which sounding nice in isolation but once they go into a production their dynamics get lost.
@stinging Insects. Soundcloud busts up (or should I say down) your audio to 128mbps. That is all it streams at, regardless of what you upload. Or at least it did when I asked a few years back. Wast of time uploading quality audio because it gets bastardised so no one will ever hear what you produced unless you let them download. Downloads will be what you uploaded.
bye. have a beautiful day.

I use both formats. Most of the time use mp3 just because it streams less data on my phone. I imagine it's just like Youtube with them having their own compression. I never really focus to catering to that stuff on my mixes.

I have found that properly encoded MP3s sound just like properly encoded WAVs. I hear no difference between my 192 KBPS MP3s and my 1411 KBPS WAVs. So, unless I'm using something in a mix, you can bet I'll have it saved as an MP3.
Also, I just use samples for drums. I have plenty of them and I don't like taking the time to make, well, something as simple (in my opinion) as a kick. Maybe I'm evil.

I used to use sample packs but rarely do it anymore. Try to make everything with sounds that I can create or that I recorded myself
Yes, Escamentia, you are evil
I don't need any hardware. It's probably comfortable to turn a knob rather than using the mouse or automation track but I still go for the latter

Fun topic. I've used the Roland R8 in the past, though its not as beefy sounding as the older Roland units. Currently I use VIs only, pretty much. I have Polyplex among others. I do have some cool loops but I don't like to just rely on other peoples; work. So, if I use a loop it usually gets sliced, mangled or otherwise Asensorized. Now, I also have a Korg EMX, which sounds great, limited yes but fun to use, but its not currently online. The other gem is the Elektron Octatrack. It's a beast, sounds great (totally digital but sounds beefy and good), quite powerful, can do all kinds of nifty things to audio. The problem is that ist GUI suuuuuucks. Its a deep machine, and the folks over there at Elektron needed a good American UX designer to round out their otherwise amazing box. The Elektron editor only works with the analog synth line, but recently I discovered a a third party editor for it called OctaEdit. I will probably acquire this software and dive headlong back into the Octatrack.
